{On the Road to KC for Spring Break}

Last Saturday morning (well, it was probably over a week ago), Mike woke me up at 1:00 a.m. and said "let's go...." so we loaded up the truck, woke our sleeping beauties up, and away we left! We started driving (and I started sleeping, with my eye mask on, of course), and by the time we hit Dallas, Mike was starting to get sleepy. Thankfully we have a great pit stop called "My sister in law Tiffany".... I felt so bad calling her at 6:30 a.m. whispering "Tiff... can we make a pit stop?" she was still asleep & said "when?" and I said "in 15 minutes.... just leave the front door unlock and we'll be quiet". So we arrive at Tiff's house, and within minutes my nephews were out jumping on the trampoline w/ my girls at 6:45 a.m.... I'm sure the neighbors were thrilled!

After eating some yummy pancakes, and sampling some "umm...that's just not right" sourdough pancakes made by my BIL Dan (sorry Dan!).... Mike woke up from his 3 hour nap and we left again.

Katie borrowing my eye mask & getting some beauty sleep in the back of the truck

We finally arrived in KC after driving through a ton of major winds in Oklahoma at about 6:45 that night. Thankfully my "Night at Rodanthe" by Nicholas Sparks book kept me occupied. I finished it in one day. (sidenote: why does everything he writes, someone has to die?) Started on "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult shortly before we got to KC.

Arrived in KC, ate some delicious mexican food prepared by my MIL. Visited, then drop dead asleep.

{Everything Green & White}

Last night we had "everything green & white" because it was St Patrick's Day. I tried to do everything green, but couldn't figure out what to make for protein that was green. I don't think something moldy would have been acceptable (nor do I have anything moldy in my fridge). SO.... we had chicken (white & sadly, dry b/c I can't cook on a grill very well)... mashed potatoes (white, didn't want to put green food coloring in it b/c that's just WRONG!).... broccoli..... cabbage (sauteed w/ bacon).....sliced kiwi.....green grapes. Follow it all up with a small bowl of pistachio pudding with cool whip on top!

Tada! Green & white foods! I even had green tealight candles in a white tealight candle holders!

Also, get ready for more posting to come on our trip back home! We had a blast going back to KC! :)

{Hard Water.... hate it!}

I feel kind of odd blogging about this. Trust me when I say it bugged me up the wall, and was so thrilled to find something that worked!

When we moved down to Texas last summer, one of the things we noticed right off the bat was how the water tasted .... odd. Very very odd. Then my hair was reacting oddly to the water as well. It's now much drier than it used to be (thanks Infusium for their conditioner! It's the best for me & my girls' hair!). Then, I noticed that my dishes were hardly coming out of the dishwasher spotless. It had some kind of white residue leftover, and it was just GROSS!

Can ya tell the difference? I missed the rinse cycle by accident and see the glass on the right? Now, look at the glass when we DON'T miss the rinse cycle! Crystal clear!

Hard water... hate it! Sadly we don't have a water softener system. And how embarrassing it was everytime we had people over to our home I had to gush "oh, I truly did wash my dishes, it just doesn't look like it!" only to have my friends smile and say "oh, I have the same problem!" I tried LemShine (or something similar to that name).... and it didn't work. Finally we tried white vinegar, adding it to the final rinse of the dishwasher, and IT WORKS!! Voila! Clean, CLEAR dishes every single time! Wahoo!

Now, the tricky part is for me to actually hear the final rinse cycle so I can dump the vinegar in. And we don't always catch it, and we end up w/ spotty dishes again. :(

{Girls Night Out}

Last Friday night we had a huge Girls Night Out for our church's women's group (called Relief Society). We *tried* to get ice cream @ Cold Stone Creamery before the movie, but the lines were SOOOOOO long! Afterwards, we saw Confessions of a Shopaholic. LOVED it!

I managed to bring my camera for a bloggatunity (is that how you say it Jen?)..... but the one w/ me in it didn't turn out very well, half everyone is blurry. ;/

Thanks for the GREAT night girls! We'll have to do it again soon!

{{PSST.... Thanks Laura & Chiemi for the tip of Picnik!! LOVE that site now!}}

{I think we watch....}

I think we watch too much Biggest Loser.

I looked out my kitchen window last week to see the girls performing this exercise. This exercise was done at the beach on the Biggest Loser a few weeks ago. Maddie is supposed to prevent Katie from going forward, and Katie is supposed to pull Maddie.

It's either that.... or my girls are playing pioneer children (aka, driving the team ~ who is Katie in this case ~ and Maddie is the wagon?).

{Playing Around}

Last weekend Mike got me a sweet new camera (I guess it's for our anniversary next month, he said). I've been wanting a Canon Rebel camera, but I was still researching the different types. He got a screaming good deal on this one on craigslist and bought it w/o me knowing! and so I (and him) went to town playing w/ it. Now, I don't have a good picture editing software yet as I have Crappy Vista.... and Canon's software doesn't recognize Vista, so until then... I have to deal w/ semi-OK pictures. :) I really need to take a photography class though....

Typical look that Katie gives now... eyes about to roll

Most of these pictures were taken on FHE night (Monday night). It was Katie's turn to pick what we were going to do, and she picked tennis & smoothies (we don't always have a spiritual message). So, away we went to Target to buy more tennis balls (can't find our other balls from the move), and she also bought a basketball she'd been wanting. So, we played tennis for a bit, and basketball. Fun times!

{KC Temple}

For my Kansas City friends....

this is the temple Madison has in mind when it is built! :)

Covered with jewels all over.
Be afraid! Be VERY afraid!

A Primary activity was held last Saturday, and this was the amazing results. Katie's temple collapsed due to poor architecting.

{A Humbling Day}

We live in a huge Jewish community. At our grocery store, there is an amazing section of kosher foods. We live close to a Jewish community center, and this month they hosted a traveling exhibit of Anne Frank's Memoirs. I had been wanting to take the girls to this exhibit since I first found out about it back in January. But something happened before I made it to the exhibit today with the girls.

It all started when Mike changed out our struts (or shocks, since I can't figure out the difference between the two) on our car. I guess an alignment is very important to have after changing such things out. So, I made an appointment at Goodyear (they gave me a $20 coupon!), and this afternoon I went in with my big bottle of water and a few magazines. I sat down in the waiting room. I spotted an elderly woman in a wheelchair talking to an elderly man sitting right across from her. Another man was sitting next to this elderly woman. She kept looking at me, but then would talk to her husband. I could understand a few words here & there, but then she started speaking in a language I couldn't understand.

Finally, her son (I assume) went up to pay for their repairs, and she stared straight at me, and started talking to me. She told me about how she was going to make some ____ (some Jewish food) but her stove went out, and on & on & on she spoke. I smiled and nodded my head, as if I understood what she was saying (although deep down inside I had no clue). The son finally came over to me, and said "she is a survivor from Auschwitz". I took a double glance at him, and said "the concentration camp?... THE Auschwitz?" He replied "YES!" I thought "amazing!" She showed me her beautiful Star of David necklace adorned with diamonds. Her husband (who was a little short man dressed in a mismatched suit topped with a fancy hat) nodded in agreement to everything she said. She told me of how she & her husband were 15 years old when they were both at Auschwitz. Although they were there, they didn't know each other then, they met after the war was over. She was there for FIVE years! I asked her how she managed to stay alive for so long, and she replied "oh, I knew how to work".

Her father was a broom maker, so she made brooms. When the machines came that made brooms, she no longer made brooms. She went on to making watches, etc. That was when her husband picked up my arm that has my cheap $10 watch, and he said admiring it. I laughed and told him "oh, this is a cheapie". He smiled. After that, the wife kept talking and talking, and the husband was acting like "OK, I've heard this story a million times now, let's go". :)

It was such a humbling experience to meet someone (two people, actually) that experienced quite possibly the most horrific experience in their life, and all this lady did was SMILE! Amazing!

After saying goodbye to this couple, and getting my car.... I took the girls to the Anne Frank exhibit. Maddie was.... well, a pain in the butt. Katie read all the paragraphs & photographs shown. There wasn't any"thing" that came from Anne Frank's possessions that were there, but there were two wooden suitcases that were on display. A US woman & her husband were living in Germany back in the 1970's and while redecorating her place, found these wooden suitcases. After much conversations, they were found to be from Jewish people in hiding who left them in these hiding places.

I've always been touched by the story of Anne Frank. She read that Germany (or another country) was looking to publish diaries after the war, so she started from scratch & created a new diary with the hopes of being a published writer, and appropriately called it "The Secret Annex". I especially love it when she wrapped up her diary with this:

In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.

{Burns dinner}

A few weeks ago my girls participated in the annual Robert Burns dinner that is held. All people who love their Scottish heritage generally dress up in their kilts and eat a traditional scottish meal (haggis). It's quite a night! I love it when the pipers play and the big drums are being .. what? banged? boomed? It's an exciting night!

I was very fortunate to find this Scottish dance group here in San Antonio. My girls are used to competing, but are no longer competing (due to a lack of a certified teacher), just dancing for enjoyment. I didn't take any pictures that night b/c I had my camera taking video of the girls dancing instead. You can view those on my facebook page under videos.

This is the first professional picture of them in their traditional outfits... I wished I would have done this with their old friends with whom they danced with for the past 4-5 years. :(

Both girls are dressed differently because they are still new to the group, and Katie wore her national dress, and Maddie wore Katie's kilt outfit. Course, I had to put suspenders under and hike it all the way up to her armpits, and constantly heard all night "this is making me look like I have a big fat belly Mom!".

They had a great night, and danced beautifully! Maddie danced the Sword Dance all by herself (got a standing ovation too and a ton of cat calls!), Katie danced the Seann Trius by herself, and another few dances with other dancers.

{I'm SO clever!}

Katie loves to eat.... she eats more than I do (double at least), and sometimes eats as much as Mike does.
She hates vegetables. She won't eat her salad. She refuses to touch her veggies!
Until tonight!
A very clever idea came to me ::throwing head back & cackling wickedly:: tonight at the dinner table. Katie wanted another helping of ravioli. I thought & thought, and finally said "y'know... you can only have another helping of ravioli IF you take another helping of salad."
gulp
Will it work?
guess what?
IT WORKED!!
She finally agreed!
Now I have my secret weapon of getting her to either a) not eat as much food b/c darn it, she eats more than she really needs to eat! or b) eat more veggies
